Position: Gallery Associate
Reports to: Gallery Manager
Hours: Part-time, 20+ hours/week - must work weekends
Pay and Benefits: $17/hr , PTO, Sick Time
Position Summary:
Primary responsibilities are customer service, sales, and gallery organization. Gallery Associates promote North Carolina Glass Center’s commitment to excellence and education in glass, and provide professional service to artists, students, collectors, and customers.
Two part-time positions are available, one based in Black Mountain and one in the River Arts District. In application, please specify which location you are interested in.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Welcome all customers in a personable and helpful manner.
- Educate the public on NCGC mission, artworks on display, and artists represented. This includes answering general questions about the studio, classes, artists, and artwork in person, via email, and via phone.
- Assist customers with purchases and provide services such as wrapping and shipping of artwork.
- Ensure safety of artwork and gallery cleanliness.
- Assist with special events, such as exhibition receptions and open houses.
- Help install exhibitions and retail gallery artwork, which includes painting, repairing walls and pedestals, and hanging didactic information.
- Provide administrative support to NCGC’s leadership staff and gallery, including filing, answering emails, and general organization.
- Flexibility to work around holidays and weekends.
- Participate in training sessions and staff meetings.
Qualifications:
- Sales and/or gallery experience strongly preferred.
- Highly organized, self-motivated and driven.
- Strong multi-tasking skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to engage visitors in a helpful and welcoming manner.
- Good sense of humor and ability to work in a team-based environment.
- Professionalism and a clean, well-groomed appearance.
- Knowledge of glass techniques and materials or willingness to learn
- Ability to work 20+ hours per week, including both Saturdays and Sundays
- Must be able to work in both the heat and minimally heated space throughout the 8-hour or longer work day.
Working Conditions:
This position is based in a hot studio environment and is subject to frequent interruption, and requires a great deal of interaction with artists and the public, both in person and via other means of communication. Must be able to lift and carry supplies and other awkward items (including glass) weighing up to 50 lbs. Must be comfortable using a ladder, basic hand tool skills such as drills and painting equipment. Requires intermittent standing, walking, sitting, squatting, stretching, and bending throughout the workday; standing and walking for the entire shift should be expected. Must be able to see and hear. Must be able to work in both the heat and minimally heated space throughout the 8-hour or longer work day.
